Hazing does not make someone "worthy" of joining an organization.
During recruitment, members are selected and offered bids. At that point they are believed to be "true and worthy" of being called an Alpha Pi Phi sister, unless they demonstrate otherwise throughout their new member period.
The prevention and elimination of hazing is the responsibility of each individual member of Alpha Pi Phi Sorority, the chapter’s Executive Council and the chapter as a whole.
Any member whose actions and/or attitudes that are not in accordance with this Policy will be subject to disciplinary action, which may result in probation or termination of membership. In addition, it is important to note that acts of hazing may result in civil and criminal liability on the part of those individuals engaged in such activities.
The six to eight week pledging period, which is mandatory of Alpha Pi Phi’s active members in their pledging period, including all pre-initiation and Lockdown Sisterhood activities, is to be directed towards the Sorority’s goals in areas of mental, moral, and social advancement, sisterhood, philanthropy, leadership, academic excellence and the understanding of the opportunities for self-improvement that are offered for the individual through the Sorority.
Alpha Pi Phi Sorority defines activities of hazing as any mental or physical requirement, request, or obligation placed upon any person (e.g. a pledging, active, alumna, honorary member or guest which:
1. Could be harmful to health and/or welfare of the person. This includes, but is certainly not limited to physical violence; forced consumption of liquid, food and or/alcohol; nonconsensual physical contact of any sort or in any form; creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shock(s).
2. Is personally degrading to the individual involved. This includes, but is certainly not limited to outrageous conduct; wearing of apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; forced engagement, either publically or privately, in stunts of ridicule and/or mockery; morally degrading or humiliating verbal abuse, activities, games; the destruction and/or removal of private property and any other such activities that are not consistent with educational purposes, academic achievement, the Mission Statement of the Sorority, Sorority policy and procedure, and Sorority Rituals.
3. Violates any federal, provincial, or municipal laws or University policy.
It is important to note that the individual compliance of any activity above, covered by the foregoing definition, in no way validates or excuses the conduction of the activity.
It is very important that all members of Alpha Pi Phi - active, pledging, alumna and honorary - understand that the choices and decisions they make in regards to hazing, acts of hazing and what the Sorority defines as hazing, has the potential to have a wide-range of effects, not only on themselves, but on their fellow sisters, sisters pledging the Sorority and the Sorority as a whole. Acts of hazing affect everyone in and involved with the chapter, putting individuals and the livelihood of the Sorority at risk.
It is the absolute expectation of the Executive Council that the chapter and individual members will make a good faith effort to meet the terms of this policy. In not doing so, members (initiated and pledging) of Alpha Pi Phi Sorority should be prepared to accept consequences.
The Sisterhood of Alpha Pi Phi is one of lifelong support and encouragement, one for the other, pursued through a bond of love, loyalty, and friendship. These values are in no way promoted by hazing in any form.
